WOW...amazing ep.
It seems clear to me now what the hatch was really for...I think.
The hatch was for making micro black holes like the Large Hadron Collider http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider. The screen cap above from Room 23 shows a cylinder (possibly representing the particle accelerator) and the cd's (representing the black holes.) The hatch computer regulated the mbh's ability to become stable. When the regulator was destroyed the mbh's became stable and swallowed up the hatch. They would've swallowed up the island and the whole world if not for the fail safe which was the final regulatory element and destroyed the particle accelerator in the process.
With an implosion, an object seemingly disappearing into itself forming a black hole, we can then see the circular belt around the object where time and space are bending. See the latest issue of National Geographic for a great artistic vision of this. If something existing on the object being imploded is blown outward instead of inward, wouldn't it shoot to the event horizon and exist within the hole's circular belt?
If the hatch imploded into the black hole it created and all the people were blown out from the center, maybe Desmond made it to the event horizon and existed in the belt where time and space is bent around it. Because none can pass an event horizon, Desmond was bounced back to the center.
So Desmond experienced a bend in time...what???
Is it possible that when Desmond visited this place he existed in the present, the future and in the past at the same time? This might explain why he went back in time as his present self and not see his past self (no doppelganger.) Another thing is that we only saw his experience with the past in his flashback but maybe he also had a future experience he doesn't quite remember or the future was imbedded in the past since they were happening at the same time. This would explain Charlie's prominance in Desmond's past or the weird woman who really looks like she could be an elder Penny.
I'm grasping at straws, obviously and don't totally get it...it is science fiction after all.
Anyway, does any of this make any sense or am I missing it completely? Don't answer that. Help! Is there a physicist out there?!
