I updated the Lost Map Project to include Roger's map that Sawyer found in the VW Bus. It appears to, at least in my opinion, that it may support the idea that the blast door map was a literal map.

Just a simple silly blog about the greatest show on TV.

Hi Dreamer,
great work on your map project! I like your analysis of Roger's map and I think you've found some important clues in it. I haven't found the circled 'C' on Danielle's map yet, but it looks like it has to be somewhere near the small crater in the South (according to your screenshot).
I've two screenshots that might help you. Check this one for the complete sketch that leads to Henry Gale's balloon and this one for the complete cable map (Source: Lostpedia).
I agree that the blastdoor map is still relevant. But I'm quite lost at the moment because of the cable map from the Flame station. On the cable map you have a north arrow and you see that Othersville is located west of the Flame. This is somehow contradicting to the information we've got from the blastdoor map or what do you think?
"On the cable map you have a north arrow and you see that Othersville is located west of the Flame."
I know. It doesn't match up. I've been grasping at straws looking for an explanation.
We could talk about the magnetic variation that comes into play on the island. It's probable that Danielle's and Kelvin/Radzinsky's maps are using compases set to a different declination to the one the Others/Dharma or whoever built the structures was using. If the blast door map was measured with the magnetic declanation effected by the magnet in the hatch, isn't it resonable to say that it could be skewed by as much as 180'?
Sometimes the declanation usage is indicated in the key. Perhaps that's what the inscription by the distance key means: "GVS - 1992..."
Yeah, I hope TPTB are aware of the chaos they've produced with the last 3 episodes in the brains of the map makers. ;) I never had so much 'WTF-experiences' in a row before in this season, but this may be the reason why I love the show...
Sayid showed Jack the magnetic anomaly in S01E13 and it seems as if he has also drawn it on Rousseau's map (there's a thin line on the north arrow). I would estimate the offset to be approximately 20-40 degree. So I would say 180° might be a too big skew.
At the moment, I've really no idea how all this information (season 3 opening scene, blastdoor map, danielle's map, cable map, ...) could be used to get an accurate image of the island (or lets say: as accurate as possible for a fictional island), but I'm sure it can be done somehow. Like you've stated above, it's a matter of the declination of map fragments. IMO, it's a safe bet to say the cable map is accurate because it was actually used to find Othersville (so I doubt that its north arrow isn't pointing north). Pretty much the same for the BDM: Locke and Eko were able to detect the Pearl. On the other hand we have Danielle's map which is lacking accuracy (according to Sayid)...
So right now, I'm mainly concentrating on interpreting the cable map and how it fits into my understanding of the island's locations. Take for example the cable-lines running NW, NE and E from the Flame. I think it's likely that they are running to other DHARMA stations, so what does this mean for the declination of the BDM? And where would be the dock for the sub on this cable map (maybe South)? I think/hope anwering these questions will bring me the insight. :) At the moment, I've just some really weird ideas that are far away from being theories. I almost don't dare to post them because they are very likely very wrong (e.g. the Flame station was a fake or Othersville is on the west coast of the island).
However, enjoy tonights episode. Maybe we'll get some more information.
Hi Dreamer,
finally I found a solution for my blastdoor map dilemma (with a little help from a poster). I'm really glad that I didn't need to use one of my weird ideas posted above to find the best solution. I've incorporated all maps seen on Lost in the latest version of my map. Some ideas are still quite bold but I think it's a good milestone in the develelopment process of my map. If you've got the time let me know what you think.
Happy holidays!
